Over time the changes could result in the emergence of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process by which people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. This differential reproduction can, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species. The term “evolution” is derived from the Latin word”evolution” which means unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has had many different meanings as it has taken shape in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. It is important for science educators to stand up for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the globe there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the elimination of textbook content about the evolution of horses as well as the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx. While these are troubling developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists. The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This belief is based on various reasons. Scientists are studying evolution to discover practical solutions such as developing new drugs, while others do so to improve the lives of animals and plant species, mostly to benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a deep faith in God and want to understand how the universe works. What is Creationism? Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. While not all creationists are Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are generally divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists. YECs are the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal, and that the universe and life on Earth started only recently. OECs aren't as known, but their beliefs are as fierce as the YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth. Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility. Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation and consider their views to be “theistic evolution.” It is sometimes known as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the created species.” In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution as well. STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the “atheist materialism” that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country. The KACR has achieved many things through its seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day. On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
