Evolution Korea Until recently, Korea's scientific community has refrained from engaging with the creationists in fear that it could increase the credibility of the movement. The silence is no longer a viable option. The STR has been fighting to eliminate evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has changed. What is Evolution? Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which may result in changes to genes or entire genomes. Over many generations, these changes can lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with disadvantageous ones. Over time, this differential reproduction can lead to the emergence of completely new species. The word “evolution” comes from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term “transmutation” to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student. Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Such a shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they don't pass on to future generations. Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high-school textbooks, including the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird's parent. Why is Evolution Important for Humanity? Evolution explains how the Earth and all its living species evolved. It is also a fundamental part of biology, and aids scientists to understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are connected. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries such as new treatments. The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so many aspects of the universe and life on this planet and has been rigorously tested and verified over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religions, since the theory only deals with objects, events and processes within the physical world. In fact many religious individuals have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. Certain Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution, and that humans share a common ancestry to other animals. It is important that science educators advocate for the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been growing. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbooks about the evolution of horses as well as the Avian ancestral Archaeopteryx. It is vital to remember that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence. The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. They claim that evolution is impossible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the scientists who founded modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and also special creation. They refer to their belief as “theistic evolution.” This is also known as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of created kinds.” The theory says that God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are identical to the original species. Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter. In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula. What is Creationism in Korea? When people think about creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution. STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individual members. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” that paints a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country. The KACR achieved many things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. It sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today. On August 6-7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
